Indonesians do not participate in any Halloween activities, but we managed to keep the fun alive by having our own Halloween festivities. We decided that, because pumpkins are difficult to find around here and extremely expensive ($73), we would carve a watermelon and paint it orange. Paul did the messy job and cleaned out the watermelon. Vince did the cutting and Alana and Jolene helped with the painting. The kids loved it and we kept the pumpkin carving tradition alive (just with a little variation).
It has become somewhat of a tradition for the expats from the US and Canada to have a Halloween Party. One family hosted a number of other families at their home where we enjoyed punch and delicious hot apple cider and cookies. We then went out to trick or treat and went to a few homes of expats that live in this particular neighbourhood. Other people also brought candy and passed it out at different homes. The kids had such a great time.
