Honesty

Many of you have commented on how great things look here and how well we are settling in.  For sure we are settling in and adjusting well to this culture, but nothing really prepares you for the different challenges that you will face.  Not everything is what we imagined.  Missing family and friends has been one of my biggest struggles, and also missing the familiarity of things.  One thing I know about myself is that I am quite reserved and enjoy feeling safe.  Being put in a brand new world, in a sense, has challenged me to step out of that comfort zone, meet new people, try new things, and look inside myself.  I have learned that I need to smile more, laugh more, and lighten up.  These are not new things that I have discovered, just things that have come, once again, to the forefront as I try to make myself known in a new community.  These are not easy things, as anyone would know, but I know that time can make all the difference in the world.

As I learn more about myself and struggle with finding my way, I remain a wife and mother to a husband and three little ones who have struggles of their own.  I try to support my husband as he adjusts to a new work environment, new colleagues, new courses to teach, all the while also missing friends and the familiarity of home.  We continuously work to keep our relationship strong while we deal with new stresses in life and keeping lines of communication open so that we learn to understand each other.

Besides being a regular spunky three year old, Jolene seems to have adjusted just fine.  It makes me sad that I don't hear the familiar "Can I go to Ryan's?" or "I wanna play with Anneke!"  or "Raina's my friend. Right mom?"  Now I hear other's kids names in those places, which is reassuring.  She seems to have very little trouble with finding new friends.  She is social and pleasant, most of the time, and enjoys being around people.  Jolene, being our youngest, however, seems to have issues with not wanting to listen and crying when she doesn't get her way.  It is the type of struggle anyone might have, but some days it seems like crying is what she does best.  Added to the stress of whatever a day may bring, this crying can drive you mad.

Alana, as you may recall, broke my heart the two weeks of school.  She clung to me and cried as if I was making her do the most horrible thing in the world... go to school.  Things have definitely improved.  Last week she asked, instead of walking with me to drop Vince off at his classroom, if she could walk by herself to her classroom.  She has amazed both Paul and I with her determination.  She has to work hard to keep up in the classroom, but she is managing and she is loving her class, her teachers, and her friends.  I have been so impressed by how well she has adapted to the changes we have experienced.  She still misses her friends, and wants to talk to them.  Just yesterday she told me that she wants to set up a time to talk to her friend Valerie.  She still holds a place in her heart for her dear Canadian friends.  She has not forgotten them and has asked a number of times, since moving here, when we are moving back.

Vince started off with a bang here in Indonesia.  He was hesitant, but he was willing to be brave when it came to new things.  I still see that adventurous side to him, but something different is happening with Vince's experience here, in Indonesia, that I wasn't prepared for.  Like me, he is having to look inside himself and figure out who he wants to be, whether he wants to or not.  He's having to grow up faster than I want my 7 year old boy to have to.  He has also had to work hard in class as he is the youngest and things are more advanced here.  However, he plugs away and rarely complains.

Maybe it's because he's the oldest and he has more memories of Canada and our life there, but he misses home the most.  He misses the snow, and he misses setting up our Christmas tree in our home in Canada, and he really, really misses his friends.  These are normal things and we just talk about those memories and how we are going to make new memories here.  But, if you ask Vince if he likes living here, he answers with a most convincing "YES!"  When asked why?, he responds by saying that there are really cool things to do here, such as: the arcade, roller coaster in the mall, KidZania, LollyPop Land, etc. (what he doesn't realize is that there are cool things in Canada that we just never got around to doing yet).  Also, even though he often struggles with the transition, he always tells me that his day at school was "Great!"  We love his positive attitude.

The details of our struggles are for us to know and to figure out. I wanted to be honest in how things are going.  I know that half of what we deal with on a daily basis is not entirely new to anyone, and these things could easily be the exact same struggles you face in Canada, or even moving to a new town.  However, culture shock is real and how they do things here are not easy to figure out.  It takes time and it adds stress to everyday things.  We are stretched, but by God's grace, He is allowing us to do this.  He is the One that reminds me to connect with my husband, to give my son a day off from school, to make a sticker reward sheet for my spunky 3 year old, and to sit and marvel as my daughter reads her school book to me.  He is the One that reminds me to believe in myself and to be confident in who I am and not worry about what others may think of me (I'm still working on that one).  He is the One who will help us grow through our everyday challenges.

A Time for Mourning

Photo: ©E Studios

We have faced great heartache this past week for dear friends of ours.  When leaving to come to Indonesia, we knew it was very likely that we would, inevitably, be away when Matthew passed away. This amazing little boy was diagnosed with cancer at 9 months and he fought hard through hundreds of procedures, surgeries, and different medications.  He beat many odds as he learned to walk and even talk.  He was such a special little guy, as he had a contagious smile, a hug that would melt your heart, and such a loving spirit.  He blessed everyone who came in contact with him.

His parents, Eric and Susan, are equally as inspiring.  As we grew to get to know them after they moved to Barrie, we loved them because they were so practical and down to earth.  During Matthew's life, I never saw Eric and Susan ever give up or complain about the situation they were in.  They were so thankful for the prayers that went up on their behalf, and they found true strength in the knowledge that God was with them and that He, alone, knew what was best for Matthew.  I loved how, even though they were dealing with ups and downs all the time, they continued to lead a very "normal" lifestyle as they continued to visit friends or family on weekends, went camping during the summer, and had friends over to their house often.  Their strength and their trust in God was, and is, truly inspiring to me.

It is difficult to be half way around the world when all you want to do is be there hugging friends who are grieving, and to be surrounded by other loved ones who also grieve with you. I am so thankful that my family is close with the Knights so that I could talk with them often and reflect on Matthew's life.  My mom, being the wonderful woman that she is, helped us be a part of Matthew's Celebration of Life by taking the ipad with her so that we could see the entire thing.  What a tremendous blessing it was to listen to the words that were sung and how powerfully God's message came through in those lyrics.  It was heartbreaking to see Eric, Susan, Joshua, Rachel, and Valerie standing there without their precious Matthew.  But, on the other hand, it was encouraging to hear the many loving words spoken about Matthew, and the words spoken to Eric and Susan to encourage them as they continue on in their walk of faith.

I grieve for the Knights and my heart is sad.  I know that we, as friends, cannot be there for them like we had hoped and that is a hard reality for me to accept.  But because I know that God has not left their side, He will put people in their lives who will be there for them as we would be.

As I reflect on Matthew's life, I realize we do not understand why these things happen, but we do know that God is all knowing and we can find comfort in that.  Matthew loved through all his pain; he continued to fight when all odds seemed to be against him.  His parents, his brother, and his sisters, loved through their pain and kept fighting for Matthew and never gave up.  Matthew is in the arms of Jesus now, and we all praise God that he is no longer suffering.  We praise God in our sorrow.  My prayer is that Matthew's life continues to be an inspiration to others and that God uses this for his glory.

Halloween... Indonesian Style!!

Indonesians do not participate in any Halloween activities, but we managed to keep the fun alive by having our own Halloween festivities.  We decided that, because pumpkins are difficult to find around here and extremely expensive ($73), we would carve a watermelon and paint it orange.  Paul did the messy job and cleaned out the watermelon.  Vince did the cutting and Alana and Jolene helped with the painting.  The kids loved it and we kept the pumpkin carving tradition alive (just with a little variation).

It has become somewhat of a tradition for the expats from the US and Canada to have a Halloween Party.  One family hosted a number of other families at their home where we enjoyed punch and delicious hot apple cider and cookies.  We then went out to trick or treat and went to a few homes of expats that live in this particular neighbourhood.  Other people also brought candy and passed it out at different homes.  The kids had such a great time.

Jolene decided she didn't want to pose for a picture.  This is the best I could get.

All these people walked around the neighbourhood together.

Jolene's dress was a tad on the long side, but she made do by hiking it up.

Birthday Celebrations!!

Alana's Birthday

Having a birthday in a new country, away from home, makes it a bit more of a special occasion.  I wanted to make sure all the kids felt special on their birthday just because family and close friends were not around to help celebrate it.  Alana enjoyed a Pajama Party for her birthday party which we had before our holidays.  She was so excited for it, which made all the more exciting to plan it for her.

Because I could not pull off a Fairy Cake, Alana settled on her second request for a cake; half purple, half pink.

Alana, Annie, Vincent, Molly, Eliana, Jolene, and Lauren enjoying their pajama party in their fort.

Enjoying pizza and cake.

October 17, 2013 (her actual birthday)

We spent the morning at the hotel, enjoying a wonderful breakfast and one last swim before heading home.

Getting a ring and movie from Vincent.

Loving the new Barbie she got.

Fighting her ear infection and napping on the couch.

Jolene's Birthday

It was so much fun celebrating Jolene's birthday.  It was hard for her to be patient as we celebrated Alana's birthday, that when the day finally came, she was so excited.  It was so neat to see how much she enjoyed everything about her day...her cupcakes, her friends coming over, the presents, and the messages she received.

Watching messages left on facebook from her cousins.  So thrilled.

Dressed up and enjoying a Ballet Dance Party.

Creating bead bracelets.

Birthdays done for another year!!

Mini Vacation, Only 5 minutes away!!

We had to make the tough decision to not go on a last minute trip somewhere.  We are cautious in how we spend our money and time and decided that getting a vehicle should be top priority.  Paul spent all day Monday ordering our new addition to the family and on Wednesday we drove all of 5 minutes to the Aryaduta Hotel where we spent a couple of nights away from home.  It was good to get away from the house.  We did a lot of swimming at the beautiful pool, which ended up being disastrous for Vince and Alana, who ended up getting swimmers ear.  Alana suffered from an ear infection first and even experienced her ear drum bursting... poor girl!  Once we get her on meds, Vince started complaining.  He experienced tremendous amounts of pain over four days because the meds were not working and his ears were completely plugged.  We ended up seeing an ENT specialist who was able to finally help Vince.
It was great to have a break from school and from routines and sleep in a bit (who knew that 7:00 would feel like sleeping in).  Here are a few pictures of our mini vacation!
