School Events

SPH is a school with around 1100 students from K-12, about 140 teachers and over 100 support staff.  It is a very impressive school that strives to offer many opportunities for children.  In the month of November and December alone, there have been so many things going on at school that I feel it is becoming my second home.  Before coming here I was hoping to become involved with the school and be a part of what is happening and, because of that, I make an effort to go to as many things as possible.  Here is a brief look at some of the things that have happened in the last month:

Indonesia Appreciation Day

The whole school body and some parents attended a two hour assembly where they shared much of Indonesia's rich culture and it's history through songs, musical instruments, drama, and a cultural fashion show.

share their batik or traditional costume.

Randall Goodgame

Randall Goodgame is a singer-songwriter who wrote many of the Veggie-Tale songs.  He performed for both the Kindy's and the Junior School.  Vince and Alana enjoyed it so much they are still singing his songs.

Community Service 

Paul's Grade 7 class participated in a community service project where they went to a kampung (village) that just lost many homes and buildings to a large fire.  His students were able to sit with many of the children in a one room school house to teach them some English.

Grade 7 Retreat

Paul also went on a three day retreat with all five grade 7 classes.  

Christmas Concert

Because the school has so many kids, they are not able to have one Christmas program.  Therefore each grade level in the Junior School gets to have its own concert complete with piano playing, violin, solos, ensembles, choirs, ballet, etc.  Vince performed a couple of songs with his ensemble class and Alana was finally able to show off her ballet skills on stage.  So proud of both of them.

First Road Trip to the Ocean... the first of many?!

Since we got our van, we have not had the opportunity to go on a road trip.  Sunday was our first time heading out on our first road trip and, although everything didn't go as planned, we managed to see some awesome things, we got to enjoy the beach and we enjoyed time as a family.  It was great to see life outside of Jakarta.

There are so many roadside stands that I don't even know how they make money.  They sell fruit, clothes, furniture, food, and other random things.

The kids did extremely well on the drive.  It probably helped that they took half their toys into the car with them.  They played, slept, ate lots, and also enjoyed the many interesting things on our drive.  What troopers!

Anyer Beach

This was our first time being on a beach since coming to this wonderful island.  Seeing as it wasn't very sunny, we didn't think once about sun screen.  We kind of forgot how close we are to the equator.  We all came home with sunburns...

No trip to the beach is complete without a bag of trash washing up onto shore.  Right?!

We are hoping to make our trips to the beach more of a common occurrence.  As long as we can cut down on the time to get there and back by taking the right roads, it might be something we can manage.
